Dane Cook has reportedly signed on for the lead role in the Disney animated film Planes .

The role was originally supposed to be voiced by Two and a Half Men star Jon Cryer. However, his performance has been scrapped in favor of the stand-up comedian.

The studio said in a recent press release :

“Dane Cook brings unmatched charisma and brilliant comedic timing and instincts to the character. He gives Dusty a great edge.”

According to Cinema Blend , a trailer for the Disney’s Planes started making the rounds yesterday. The clip featured dialogue recorded by former star Jon Cryer. Now that Disney has decided to switch gears by catching Cook in the lead role, the studio has pulled the trailer from the internet.

The film originally began its life as a direct-to-video spin-off of the Cars franchise. However, positive feedback prompted Disney to scrap its initial plans for the feature. The studio now intends to release the film into theaters later this year.

The official synopsis reads:

“Dusty is a cropdusting plane who dreams of competing in a famous aerial race. The problem? He is hopelessly afraid of heights. With the support of his mentor Skipper and a host of new friends, Dusty sets off to make his dreams come true.”

Internet Movie Database currently lists Reno 911 alum Carlos Alazraqui as portraying El Chupacabra in the upcoming film. Alaraqui has contributed voice work to a number of motion pictures and television shows, including Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 .

Unless something goes haywire between now and then, Disney hopes to have the spin-off in theaters later this year. You can find an updated trailer for the film embedded below.

Moviegoers will be able to see Planes in 2D or Disney 3D when the flick flies into theaters on August 9. Are you looking forward to the Cars spin-off?
