This is a side of D.L. Hughley we haven’t seen before, but then again, Oprah kind of does that to people. While on Oprah’s Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Hughley opened up about his son Kyle, 26, who is living with Asperger’s syndrome.
During the appearance , he became so emotional speaking about his son that the comedian broke down in tears. Speaking of his accomplishments despite his struggle, D.L. said, “He graduated from college but everything has to be the same. He goes to work at the same time. He eats the same thing. So, the other day three weeks ago, I had to get gas, and he said, ‘Daddy, I’ll do it.’ ”
He continued, “And I’m a nervous break — and he gives me the receipt and the keys, and I could not stop crying because he did something he was afraid to do. I just didn’t believe he could do it, and he did it. I held him and said, ‘You’re gonna be alright.’ And I think sometimes I don’t know for sure, but he’s gonna be fine.”

This isn’t the first time he spoke about his son Kyle. Back in 2014, Hughley spoke on the D.L. Hughley Show about his son overcoming the same obstacle he discussed with Oprah.
“You want things for them that they’re not ready for and it’s tough.” D.L. then went on to describe the scene that lead to Kyle filling up gas in his car. Since Kyle needs things to be the same, he only drives his own car. Hughley had asked his daughter to fill up his car with some gas, and when she said she couldn’t, as he told Oprah, his son stepped up.
He continued to discuss Kyle filling his car up with gas. “I go get dressed and I am horrified. I’m literally scared to death. It’s just hard. He came in and said, ‘Here’s your receipt.’ He did something that he was uncomfortable with doing. For anyone that has a child like that, you understand that there are moments that like that won’t mean anything else to anybody else, but will let you know that he is getting it.”
Hughley continued, “It’s an amazing thing that every once in a while you will find something that let’s you know, that you’re on the right path. Those days like that will mean more to you than anything else.”
