Cruel Intentions will finally produce a worthy sequel to the 1990’s classic teen film. After announcing the TV series reboot last fall, information about the pilot and its cast is finally coming to life.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the starlet who played the manipulative Katherine Merteuil in the original Cruel Intentions, will reprise the role in the upcoming pilot, the Huffington Post confirmed. Already, Sarah Michelle Gellar has made changes to her appearance to recapture the look she had in the original film.

In the Cruel Intentions reboot, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character will be a grown woman who is battling for her family company. The battle will be against her step-brother Sebastian Merteuil’s son Bash Casey, a character being played by American Crime actor Taylor John Smith, according to Variety.

Joining Sarah Michelle Gellar in her fight to keep her family’s company is husband Pascal Barrett, a role being played by Burn Notice’s Coby Bell. Bell will play a powerful California lawyer, according to Deadline.

Sebastian Merteuil’s love interest in the original Cruel Intentions was Annette Hargrove, played by Reese Witherspoon. The Oscar-winning actress was not approached for this project, and her role will instead be played by Drop Dead Diva star Kate Levering. As Bash’s mother, Kate Levering is forced to return to California and face her nemesis again on behalf of her son, the Hollywood Reporter reported this week.

Other cast members have been announced for the Cruel Intentions reboot. Metro reported that The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift star Nathalie Kelley will play the role of Carmen, a woman who works for both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Coby Bell’s characters.

In the original Cruel Intentions, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character is unmasked at the end of the film by her step-brother’s journal following his death. Revealing her true character allowed others who were harmed by the conniving step-sister to move forward with their lives, the movie suggested toward the end.

The original Cruel Intentions cast was loaded with budding up-and-coming stars. In addition to Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe played the role of step-brother Sebastian Merteuil, the playboy sibling that participated in the bet. The bet was over a virtuous female named Annette Hargrove, the role played by Reese Witherspoon.

Other veteran actors who appeared in the movie Cruel Intentions include Eric Mabius, Christine Baranski, Sean Patrick Thomas, Joshua Jackson, Tara Ried, and Selma Bair. Even members of the original behind-the-scenes team are returning to the show, a fact captured by Sarah Michelle Gellar in an Instagram post last week.

Cruel Intentions was successful enough for a second movie to be produced. In 2000, a prequel was released called Cruel Intentions 2, featuring younger versions of the roles Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe made famous. While the movie was not well reviewed, the film served as the first major roles for both veteran acting stars Robin Dunne and Amy Adams.

A third movie was produced, to little fanfare. Cruel Intentions 3 was based off a relative of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character that attend a private co-ed college. The cousin – played by General Hospital alum Kristina Anapau – befriends two college guys who prey on the naivety of young female classmates.

Revisiting hits like Cruel Intentions from the 1990s is the rage in Hollywood. Netflix recently released a full season of Fuller House – a reboot of the ABC sitcom Full House – that stars most of the original cast. Only a few notable exceptions did not return to the show’s first season.

Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t the only actress talking about a possible reboot of a 1990s series, either. Charmed actress Alyssa Milano recently discussed the possibility of their show rebooting, suggesting that all of the original cast members were fully behind the potential project.
