Clint Dempsey is rejoining Major League Soccer, and reports suggest he will sign with the Seattle Sounders . Dempsey has spent seven seasons in the English Premier League and is currently playing with Tottenham Hotspur.
But Tottenham announced on Saturday that the team reached a deal with MLS to return Dempsey to the United States.
Rumors have run rampant around Dempsey and his return to the United States this past week , reports Fox Sports. The Sounders first expressed interest in him on Thursday, though it’s likely a deal was in place for a long time before, if it is truly his team in MLS.
Dempsey played with the New England Revolution until the team sold him to Fulham in 2007. Once there, he scored 50 goals in 184 league appearances in the course of five years.
The US international was quickly known as a fan favorite. Then, Dempsey was sold to Tottenham where he scored seven goals in 29 Premier League matches. He also scored three times in two FA Cup matches and had two more goals in 10 other games with the team.
But Clint Dempsey’s move to the Seattle Sounders has not been confirmed, though it is widely expected to be either Saturday or in the coming days. The Sounders teased a possible announcement on Saturday when they tweeted, “Make sure you get to your seats by 7:15 tonight for a special presentation from the #Sounders!”
ESPN notes that the Sounders could pay the Spurs a record $9 million transfer fee to acquire Dempsey. His base salary is reportedly $32 million over four years, a number that would be the largest contract given in MLS history.
Seattle also announced on Thursday that it signed veteran midfielder Shalrie Joseph to a new contract. The move opened up a designated player spot, one that Dempsey may be getting ready to fill.
