Actress Claire Danes is annoyed with all of the memes and YouTube videos dedicated to her “crying face,” an acting technique she frequently employs on the popular Showtime series Homeland .
Though Danes has gotten a lot of critical acclaim for her portrayal of bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison in the series , many have spoofed her emotional outbursts on the show, including friend Anne Hathaway for an episode of Saturday Night Live .
Though Hathaway reportedly apologized in advance for her skit, sending flowers to Danes after the episode aired, the Internet has not been so kind.
“I mean, I’m vain about giving the best possible performance I can give, but I’m never concerned about how, you know, physically desirable I’m going to be in the process,” Danes tells Elle Magazine . “In my personal life, I have plenty of vanity, but onscreen I’m not representing myself. I’m representing this person I’m playing. I have to say, I find it very odd that it’s been sort of objectified.”
“It’s just the way feelings register on my face. It’s not calculated; it’s not an aggressive gesture. It’s been isolated from the rest of my work, like it’s a tacked-on thing. It’s not,” she says.
Danes does continue to rake in popular acclaim for her role, including recent laurels from ex-US president Bill Clinton, reports The Sun . Danes said that Clinton personally complimented her performance at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
“He appreciated how my character is shedding light on mental illness, which is still a taboo subject. That was very flattering and I was very touched,” she said.
