Christy Turlington, supermodel of the 1990s, has joined forces with Apple in order to raise awareness for her organization, Every Mother Counts (EMC), a non-profit that campaigns for safer care for women in pregnancy and childbirth.
Turlington – also known as Mrs. Turlington Burns, wife of actor Edward Burns, and mother of their two children – joined Apple CEO Tim Cook on stage in San Francisco at the company’s Spring Forward media event yesterday. As Fox News reports, the supermodel and philanthropist was there in order to talk about the Apple Watch’s role in helping Christy train for both a half marathon in Kilimanjaro (a video of which was shown to audience members at the event) and the upcoming Virgin Money London Marathon on April 26.
Christy Turlington first became aware of the global plight of many women in pregnancy when she suffered her own complications while in labor with her daughter in 2003. The trouble she experienced led to her studying for a Masters in Public Health at Columbia University, after which Turlington began working for CARE (Christian Action, Research, & Education) in 2005 and became an Ambassador for Product Red.

Every Mother Counts was founded in 2010, after Christy released her 60 minute documentary, No Woman, No Cry . As the Inquisitr reported, the film charts the shockingly reduced level of care for many pregnant women in Tanzania, Guatemala, Bangladesh, and even the US. Turlington directed the follow-up documentary, Every Mile, Every Mother , as a record of why long-distance running is the participatory method by which her charity raises awareness and funds for those lacking a basic level of care in pregnancy and labor.
“Our goal is to continue to contribute to the global effort to significantly reduce lives lost at birth. I don’t really think of the organization as a legacy per se. I strongly believe that each preventable death is one death too many.”
As People Magazine reports, Turlington lauded the Apple Watch for its ability to track her time, distance and pace when running. The Jivamukti yoga devotee has always put fitness first, no doubt from her many successful years as one of the world’s top supermodels, when Christy worked alongside the likes of Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.

A member of the Harvard Medical School Global Health Council, as well as the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, Turlington sports the Apple watch with model-aplomb in the video unveiled at the San Francisco event – the first of many videos charting her training for the London Marathon with its assistance. As Yahoo! Finance reports, it is the first brand-new device launched without Steve Jobs.
CEO Tim Cook has, since childhood, dreamed of making a call from a watch: now that day has come. With a planned release date of this April, devotees of the company’s products will no doubt be making a dash to their stores concurrently with Christy Turlington’s own long-distance running attempt for EMC at this year’s marathon.
