China is jamming radio broadcasts in English from the BBC.
Chinese authorities may be behind the disruption of English broadcasts, says a BBC broadcaster. The British broadcasting agency has said:
“The BBC strongly condemns this action which is designed to disrupt audiences’ free access to news and information.”
China enforces strict laws governing the transmission of public media, including such widely free services as YouTube. Some broadcasters have even taken measures to prevent their signal from reaching Chinese audiences.
According to Reuters , the London-based service says:
“The BBC has received reports that World Service English shortwave frequencies are being jammed in China. Though it is not possible at this stage to attribute the source of the jamming definitively, the extensive and coordinated efforts are indicative of a well-resourced country such as China.”
Other foreign broadcasters such as US stations Voice of America and Radio Free Asia have filed complaints concerning the blocking of their service in Beijing. As previously reported by The Inquisitr , the New York Times accused China of hacking its computers during an investigation into a story about Premier Wen Jiabao.
Director of BBC Global News Peter Horrocks states that:
“The jamming of shortwave transmissions is being timed to cause maximum disruption to BBC World Service English broadcasts in China. The deliberate and coordinated efforts by authorities in countries such as China and Iran illustrate the significance and importance of the role the BBC undertakes to provide impartial and accurate information to audiences around the world.”
Basically, China authorities are timing it so foreign news broadcasts won’t reach their airwaves.
