Charli XCX’s second studio album “Sucker” is really scoring with the critics. The singer, who just made an appearance as musical guest on Saturday Night Live, is about to drop her biggest album of her career so far.
Those who may not know her will certainly know her song “Boom Clap.” It was heavily promoted during The Fault in Our Stars commercials, which helped the single soar up the Billboard charts. That said, Charli XCX is not a one hit wonder by any stretch. In fact, most reviewers are praising her efforts on her upcoming album “Sucker.”
According to TIME magazine , who calls Charli XCX “an unlikely teenpop starlet,” said that Sucker, “takes nothing seriously” which is due to the artist’s constant reinvention and self-awareness.
“Charli XCX easily outdoes her peers. “Gold Coins” is Lorde’s “Royals” with the saturation and satire cranked up, and the broke bitterness even more acute. Throwbacks “Need Ur Luv” and “Breaking Up” (on the former, shades of The Chalets) should render would-be doo-wopper Meghan Trainor entirely irrelevant.”
The New York Times said Charli XCX is at her best with “Sucker.” “It’s smart, loud, cheeky, gimmick loving pop, intent on making every song go band.” With the pop singer even saying in her new behind the scene video for her new single “Break the Rules”, “All the best pop songs are so dumb. That’s why they’re clever.”
For this generation that knows more about the ins and outs of the music business due to social media, it practically begs for a smart pop star. Charli proves at 22-years-old she isn’t to be toyed with by an A&R or management. It’s not a surprise that someone of Charli’s age is business savvy and knows the business. Before she jumped on the scene, ladies like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were tossing around image revamps and bubblegum pop songs. There’s a blueprint for being a pop star and succeeding.
Charli worked this to her advantage says the times. “The music is brash and glossy, but its attack is varied and full of clever moments…The determination to be a pop hitmaker isn’t just in the sound and structure of the songs; it’s in the lyrics, too.”
This might be why Billboard has claimed her new album to be the defining moment for her as a hit pop star and personality.
“Perhaps more than any other young hitmaker, Charli has a sound that is distinctively her own, despite the murderers’ row of producer-songwriters onboard..Sucker is likely to confirm that she’s one of pop’s biggest new stars — and biggest personalities.”
Looks like “Sucker” is only the beginning for this star.
