Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Says Americans ‘Lack Knowledge Of Foreign Affairs’ As Evident By Support For Donald Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that he is disappointed with his neighbors to the south and that Americans apparently need to pay more attention to what is happening in the rest of the world. Trudeau politely attacked American citizens for “lacking knowledge on foreign affairs” implying that the support for businessman Donald Trump as a GOP front runner is proof. Trudeau says it is telling that Canadians wish that Americans would “pay a little more attention to the world.”

The Daily Mail reports that Canadian PM Justrin Trudeau gave an interview with 60 Minutes ahead of his scheduled trip to Washington, D.C. The young Canadian Prime Minister has been deemed the “anti-Trump” by the Washington Post and many expected the young leader to voice his opinion on Trump upon arrival in the U.S. Those close to Trudeau say he will not interfere with American domestic affairs as it is not his place. However, he says he wishes that Americans would “pay a little more attention to the world” and that things may be different.

Though in his 60 Minutes interview, Trudeau refused to name the candidate he was referring to when he said the rise of the candidate could be attributed to “Americans lack of knowledge of foreign affairs.” It has been speculated that Trudeau was speaking about businessman Donald Trump as the Prime Minister has spoken out about the divisive rhetoric of Trump in the past. In fact, in December of 2015, Trudeau was asked specifically about Donald Trump’s “hateful rhetoric” and he responded with a rather clear cut response.

“I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that I stand firmly against the politics of division, the politics of fear, the politics of intolerance or hateful rhetoric. If we allow politicians to succeed by scaring people, we don’t actually end up any safer. Fear doesn’t make us safer. It makes us weaker.”

Donald Trump, shown speaking at a campaign rally in Warren Michigan, has been the topic of much foreign policy debate in the recent months as he maintains a strong lead as the GOP presidential front runner.
Though Trudeau says he will not get involved in U.S. domestic politics, he spoke out about the lack of knowledge that Americans have on foreign affairs because they isolate themselves. Trudeau notes that Canadians follow American politics closely because it is important on a global scale. However, he says that Americans do not appear to do the same in return. Instead, Trudeau implies that most Americans lack knowledge of Canadian policies and that the country wishes they would pay a little more attention to their neighbor to the north.

“Having a little more of an awareness of what’s going on in the rest of the world, I think is, is what many Canadians would hope for Americans. I think we sometimes like to think that, you know, Americans will pay attention to us from time to time, too.”

After the broad statement of Americans being ignorant about Canadian policies, Trudeau went on to take a jab at an unnamed political candidate and his followers noting that it showcases Americans “lack of knowledge on foreign affairs.” A spokeswoman for Trudeau says she is unable to confirm which presidential candidate that Trudeau was referencing when he made the statement. However, with the Prime Minister only speaking out about Trump’s divisive rhetoric in the past, it seems likely he was referring to Trump when he made the bold claim.

Despite his stance that he will remain politically neutral, it seems that Trudeau is pushing for a candidate with a more “global” perspective. With Trudeau being dubbed the “anti-Trump” it is no wonder he is not fond of Trump proposed policies. For example, Trudeau is leading the charge as the county begins accepting Syrian refugees, a stance vastly different from presidential hopeful Donald Trump. Trudeau seemingly calls Trump “ignorant” for painting “ISIS and others” with a “broad brush.”

“They are the greatest victims of terrorist acts around the world. Painting ISIS and others with a broad brush that extends to all Muslims is not just ignorant, it’s irresponsible.”

What do you think about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement that Americans are only thinking about themselves? Are they ignorant when it comes to “foreign policies” for supporting an unnamed presidential candidate that many speculate to be Donald Trump based off of Trudeau’s previous statements about the businessman?
