Concord, CA – Rudy the camel got loose and went for a stroll along Bailey Road. The fleeing animal was involved in a camel-car collision but escaped uninjured. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were kept quite busy tracking and ultimately capturing Rudy.

The camel escaped its enclosure on Tuesday afternoon, Examiner notes. Folks driving along Bailey Road braked quickly when they spotted Rudy the camel wandering around Concord. Some stealthy individuals were even able to convince the animal to follow them to a safer spot on the side of the roadway.

Rudy the camel was grazing happily next to the road when CHP officers arrived on scene. The camel belongs to DB Inc. Land & Cattle Company. California police offices were able to transport Rudy safely back to his home by late afternoon.

The short taste of freedom must have inspired Rudy to flex his escape artists skills again. Not long after he was returned to his wired enclosure several miles away from the roadway, the camel escaped a second time.

Rudy and a red Honda minivan ultimately collided during the run for freedom. The California minivan driver was likely startled when coming face-to-face with a camel but also walked away without injuries, the Oakland Tribune notes.

The camel-car collisions must have stunned and frightened Rudy. He got back up after the accident and began walking away before breaking into a full trot. The camel’s owner, Raymond Ferrante, was finally able to calm Rudy down and urge him back into a livestock trailer for another trip home.

Ferrante had this to say about the camel escape:

“He’s fine, he’s hot and his adrenaline’s pumping, but he’s fine. I have never done this before, so I can now put rescuing a camel on my resume.”

Do you think Ferrante will be able to keep Rudy the camel “down on the farm” now that he knows there is a great big world out there?
