More details about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare emerged following the Monday morning release of the game trailer. Infinity Ward is taking the steps to space send the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC shooter into, but is including some technical improvements, too. The game will feature a Warship to serve as the player’s home base / hubworld, plus a seamless campaign with “few visible loading times.”
The Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare campaign takes place in a “plausible future” with players in the role of Captain Reyes, a Tier 1 Special Operation pilot, per a fact sheet received from Activision. Events force him to take command of the Retribution, one Earth’s last remaining warships, to lead the remnants of the planet’s forces against the Settlement Defense Front (SDF).
Infinity Ward describes the single-player campaign as a return to large scale war. It will take players from Earth to other parts of the solar system. The trailer released earlier this morning implied Mars as a location, but other resource rich areas such as asteroids. In a Twitch livestream, the developers explained how players would have to seek cover on the asteroid to avoid being roasted by the sun and its 2,000 degree temperatures.
“The Settlement Defense Front (The Front) represents a splinter group of insurgents that broke away from the United Nations Space Alliance during a war of secession, years ago. In the world of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, our planet has been stripped of its natural assets through population growth and industrial expansion. The people of Earth now rely upon colonies throughout the solar system to mine planets and asteroids for necessary fuel and other resources. The Front is a fascist power, comprised of brutal and militant radicals, toughened by the extreme conditions of off-world environments. They seek to control those outposts and their wealth, putting a stranglehold on the countries of Earth. After years of uneasy stalemate, diplomatic relations are strained and it will take only the slightest nudge to tip the entire solar system into war.”
The Retribution is the warship that will carry players from Earth to other parts of the solar system. It serves as the “player’s home and representation of their life on Earth,” according to information released by Activision. It is described as a key character in the story and likely serves as a hub world for players to explore and take on their next missions.
Co-op play for the campaign has not been mentioned, but Infinity Ward is taking the effort to make the campaign “seamless.” This means players will see few, if any, loading screens as they move from mission to mission. Expect some of these to be hidden behind CGI cut-scenes.
Multiplayer
“Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare features a Multiplayer mode that features an evolution of Call of Duty’s movement system with an emphasis on front-line engagement. It rewards players for utilizing their surroundings and applying strategy in the heat of the moment. Maps are designed to immerse players into fast, fun, and frenetic gameplay that players have come to expect from Call of Duty. With its new approach to play, multiplayer will bring innovative gameplay that challenges players to achieve their goals in creative ways based on their specific play style.”
Expect more details on multiplayer when the annual E3 gaming convention rolls around in June.
