Buffalo Bills Rumors: C.J. Spiller Could Be Traded To Texans For No. 1 Pick

Buffalo Bills rumors have been churning for days now, with sources close to the organization saying the team is working hard to trade up to the top of Thursday’s NFL draft.

New rumors say it may take trading electric but inconsistent running back C.J. Spiller to do so.

Unsourced rumors online are circulating that the Bills are talking to the Houston Texans about shipping off Spiller, their No. 9 pick and another high round pick in this year’s draft to get to the top spot. Doing so would allow the Bills to take Jadeveon Clowney, who the team’s front office views as a once-in-a-generation talent.

This week the Buffalo Bills rumors kicked around to Buffalo Rumblings , which broke down the team’s running back situation but didn’t report on any specific trade talks.

The report noted :

“Spiller, who turns 27 in August, is more often mentioned in fan generated draft-day trade scenarios than he is as a potential long-term solution for the Bills at running back. It hasn’t helped that, while playing with a nagging ankle injury, he struggled to snugly fit into the Doug Marrone and Nathaniel Hackett offense in 2013 – and that’s the general view of his play despite his rushing for 933 yards. His 4.6 yards per carry average was by far his lowest since a 74-carry rookie season in 2010. Spiller’s rookie deal has an opt-out clause after this season, and barring an early contract extension, he is very likely to hit the open market next spring.”

If the Buffalo Bills could pull off the draft-day trade with the Houston Texans, it may not come as too high a cost to the team. Many other teams have already proven that effective running backs can be found in all rounds of the draft — this year’s rookie of the year Eddie Lacy was taken late in the second round — and while effective, Spiller is not irreplaceable.

Other rumors say the Buffalo Bills have another player in mind if do manage to trade up. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said the team could also be looking for Auburn tackle Greg Robinson, who would give a boost to the Bills offense and second-year quarterback E.J. Manuel.
