Billboard Music Awards 2016: Demi Lovato And Nick Jonas Perform, Britney Spears Proves She’s Still A Force To Be Reckoned With, Madonna’s Touching Prince Tribute, And More

The Billboard Music Awards are always a huge deal for the music industry, especially in 2016. “Rumor Has It” singer Adele will be premiering her new video for “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)”, but that’s just the beginning of the highlights. The Billboard show will also include a comeback by fan-favorite Britney Spears, who up until now has been relatively reclusive during her Las Vegas residency. And, of course, Queen of Pop Madonna will return to take her crown once again as she performs a tribute to the late Prince.

People got the inside scoop on Adele’s new Billboard premiere, which they note was produced by Max Martin and is on the 28-year-old crooner’s album 25. The Billboards air this Sunday, May 22 on ABC. The complete lineup is packed with all-stars, including Ariana Grande, girl-group phenom Fifth Harmony, and the legendary Celine Dion.

R&B/Pop sensation Rihanna will also be performing during the Billboard Awards. With possibly the most Billboard Awards of any other artist, Ri Ri has won a Billboard Award for Top Female Artist in 2011 and 2013 alongside many others, and she is up for that category again in 2016. This year, she’ll be competing against Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Adele, and Selena Gomez, who were also nominated as finalists.
Britney Spears will also return to the stage after a while out of the limelight. Billboard discovered that the 34-year-old superstar will perform a medley of her hits and also be honored with the Millennium Award at the Billboards this year (and to think she started out as a Mickey Mouse Club alum). Beyonce and Whitney Houston are the only two artists besides Spears to have received the Millennium Award.
During perhaps the most highly-anticipated part of the show, Madonna will also be performing a tribute to the late Prince. The 57-year-old who gave the world hits like “Purple Rain” and “When Doves Cry” was widely mourned throughout the entertainment industry when he was found dead in his home several weeks ago. The Inquisitr found that details of Madge’s Billboard tribute to Prince have been kept secret, but presumably she will be singing some of the songs the iconic artist was best known for.
Despite the nice idea, some fans are claiming Madonna is “not good enough” for Prince and should either share the stage or get off it entirely. Fans seem to think that Madonna has no real relation to Prince, and some suggested Lady Gaga was the more appropriate choice, as the Purple One greatly admired her work.
Despite fan objections, the show must go on. Jonas Brothers alum Nick Jonas will be in attendance as will pop powerhouse Demi Lovato, and both will be performing at the Billboards. Lovato just released her album Confident this past October, and the titular song from that album has become one of her biggest hits. Her single “Cool for the Summer,” off the same album, is also a likely choice for her to sing at the awards ceremony.
Nick Jonas’ 2014 album, named for him, contained such popular songs as “Chains” and “Jealous,” which Jonas is likely to perform at the Billboards Ceremony. The album also featured his song “Levels,” which has been in the spotlight more recently as well and would likely be a top choice for him to perform this year. Jonas will be joining Demi Lovato this summer for the Future Now Tour, which features opening act Mike Posner.
