Barry Hinson has been the head men’s basketball coach of the University of Southern Illinois for two years. During that time, he has been relatively unknown on the national level. After a 73-65 loss to Murray State on Tuesday night, he’s about to become a household name.
Coach Barry Hinson was visibly angry as he stepped to the podium for the normal post game press conference. He started in on how soft his players were on the court.
In the rant, Hinson referred to his players as “mama’s boys” and compared coaching his young team to “house training a puppy dog. You know what, when the dog does something wrong, bad dog. I’m not going to hit ’em. I’m not going to swat ’em, but bad dog, get on the treadmill.”
As for turnovers, don’t get Hinson started on those. He said that his team was turning the ball over like they were “tax credits”. In regards to one play in particular, Hinson says he swears he hear one of his players say, “Merry Christmas” as the Saluki player committed the turnover.
But the highlight of the press conference came while referring to the lack of effort from his big men.
“I’ve been telling my wife this for years, size doesn’t matter. My wife… my wife …can score more than two buckets on 11 shots because I know my wife will at least shot fake one time.”

The players were not too happy about Barry Hinson’s press conference. Utilizing twitter, the place where all controversies should be handled , one of the Saluki forwards spoke his mind (he later deleted the tweet):

University of Southern Illinois athletic director Mario Moccia said he supports Hinson as his coach, but that he was not ok with Hinson calling out one player by name. At one point, Hinson points the finger at USI point guard, Marcus Fillyaw, who he calls “awful”.
USI is in last place in the Missouri Valley Conference and has lost eight games. Coach Barry Hinson was assistant at Kansas University under Bill Self and is accustomed to winning. I hope the Saluki basketball team is ready for a little “house training” this week.
