A baby was recently born with an incredibly rare birth defect called holoprosencephaly in which only a brain stem forms instead of a full brain. Therefore, doctors told his grief-stricken mother, 24-year-old Emma Murray, that the child would likely die within minutes of being born. However, against all odds, baby Aaron not only survived those critical hours after birth, he has made it to his second birthday and accomplished a feat doctors thought was impossible, he said his first word: “mummy.”

The Daily Mail reports that 2-year-old Aaron has baffled doctors by making it to his second birthday despite being born without a brain. The little boy was born with just a brain stem, the portion of the brain needed to breathe and move, but he does not have a full brain. Therefore, doctors informed his mother, Emma, that the little boy would likely only live for a few minutes after birth. However, to the disbelief of the medical staff, Aaron made it through and is celebrating his second birthday.

In addition to living well beyond the minutes anticipated by doctors, Aaron has also spoken his first word, which for the Scottish-born baby was “mummy.” While many parents anxiously wait for their child’s first words, Emma had never expected to hear a word from Aaron’s mouth.

“He looked at me, and said ‘mummy’. I couldn’t believe it. I’d been told my son would only live for a few minutes, but now here he was saying ‘mummy’ which is something I never thought I would ever hear.”

Emma says that Aaron is not just speaking but also spends a lot of time clapping and giggling. Despite having just a brain stem, the boy seems to be thriving in ways that doctors thought was impossible. Aaron’s rare brain condition wasn’t the only aspect of the birth that was unusual.

Emma admits that she had no idea she was pregnant before giving birth to Aaron in March of 2013. Emma says she didn’t have any of the normal pregnancy symptoms and didn’t gain much weight. It wasn’t until she went into labor that she found out that she was pregnant with the baby that would change her life forever.

The doting mother says that she was rushed to the hospital in March of 2013 with what she thought was a burst appendix. However, when she arrived at the hospital, she was told that she was in labor and about to give birth to a baby boy. Moments after giving birth, doctors realized something wasn’t right with the newborn and rushed the child for a brain scan, which revealed the diagnosis of holoprosencephaly. Emma was told the condition was “incompatible with life” and to have any relatives who would want to see the child come to the hospital immediately, as the baby likely didn’t have long to live.

“Everything had happened so fast – I didn’t even know I was pregnant, I’d given birth and been told my baby was going to die all in the same 24 hours.”

Aaron was born with a rare brain defect which left him with just a brain stem.

However, to the surprise of the medical staff, baby Aaron would leave the hospital and go on to live a life that they never thought was possible. Now Emma says that after making it past the one-year mark, Aaron seems to be making steady progress, including the use of his first word, one which Emma couldn’t be more excited to hear come from her little boy’s mouth: “mummy.”
