Kerry George Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran, died after a violent attack outside his home in Escondido last week. A hard-core Donald Trump supporter was a native of South California who was known for hosting American flags and pro-Trump memorabilia outside his home. His wife reportedly confirmed the news of his demise. Per reports, a bystander who tried to help during the assault also suffered injuries.

According to NBC News, Sheron was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on May 20, and he died on May 24. His family described him as a warm and social person who spent years working as a chef at local retirement homes. Expressing remorse over his demise, his family said that his passing left a deep void, while his stepdaughter, Alejandra Nava, said that the loss has “rocked” them.

Nava remembered hosting a weekly Friday fish fry that united their friends and neighbors. She added, “He was definitely a kind man. Anybody who was anybody knew him at the churches and stuff.” Meanwhile, the 69-year-old’s wife called her husband a “beautiful man” while admitting that she was struggling to deal with the loss. “I want my husband back,” she said.

An ABC News report notes that the Army veteran’s home, which displayed numerous flags and political signage, had gained popularity as the “Trump House” in recent times. His relatives also said the property had experienced harassment in the past, but none of the earlier incidents had reportedly turned violent.

According to an NBC News report, police shared that officers received a call on May 20 around 2:25 p.m. reporting an attack outside Sheron’s house. When they reached the spot, they found an elderly man suffering serious injuries, and a witness to the account who had intervened was also hurt. Officers said that the Army veteran was shot in the jaw and then repeatedly assaulted after he fell on the ground.

He was taken to a medical facility, but he succumbed to his injuries. On the other hand, the suspect who was observed nearby fled the crime scene after the incident.

A 32-year-old Navy veteran Thomas Caleb Butler, who also hails from Escondido, has reportedly been taken into custody on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, criminal threats, and battery. However, he pleaded not guilty on May 22. San Diego County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Tanya Sierra, told NBC News that Butler’s next hearing is set for June 3.

Butler reportedly worked as an information systems technician between 2011 and 2023, serving in several states and taking part in deployments connected to counterterrorism missions. Officials have not been able to confirm the motive behind the attack as yet. Police also stated that detectives have not found evidence hinting at whether the attack was politically motivated and whether the suspect and victim had any prior contact.

The San Diego medical examiner’s office has not yet determined the official cause and manner of death. According to ABC News, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office is set to review the case during a June 3 hearing to decide whether any charges should be updated.
