Robbery suspect Matthew Donald Maxwell, who wore an Albert Einstein during one of his alleged crimes, was arrested in Atlanta on Wednesday for robbing a series of banks in the Florida area, the Tampa Bay Times is reporting. Authorities say 29-year-old Mathew Donald Maxwell, also known as Matthew Lynch Maxwell, walked into the Venice Wells Fargo Bank and demanded that the tellers give him money. He was wearing a Albert Einstein Halloween mask at the time.

One Venice Wells Fargo patron tried to stop the Albert Einstein mask-wearing robber before he could escape, but was sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray as the robber got away. Police launched an investigation, but were unable to arrest the suspect until they located him in Atlanta. The case became known as the Albert Einstein bank robber case.

In the November 2013 Albert Einstein robbery, Sarasota Police officers responded to a burglary call at a Wells Fargo branch located at U.S. Highway 41 Bypass South in Venice. When officers arrived, they found one patron suffering the after effects of a pepper spray attack and several terrified bank tellers who attempted to describe the robber and the red getaway vehicle. The amount of money stolen in the robbery was not specified, according to an earlier report by The Inquisitr .

Sarasota detectives were able to retrieve the Wells Fargo bank surveillance tape which captured the image of an unidentified male wearing an Albert Einstein mask, which featured white unkempt hair and black fuzzy eyebrows. Detectives also had on-hand the Albert Einstein mask that the bank robbery suspect dropped as he exited the building.

At least two witnesses who were interviewed by police identified Maxwell during a police line up in Georgia. Investigators were originally led to Matthew Donald Maxwell after a tipster called Crime Stoppers.

Maxwell is suspected of robbing over a dozen banks in Tampa Bay and Sarasota. He wore a number of comical disguises during the robberies, but was said to have only donned the Albert Einstein mask once.

The Albert Einstein robbery case has been the subject of many jokes since it made headlines late last year. Albert Einstein’s name has also come up in other crime cases, such as serial killer Herbert Mullin, who believed that he was chosen by Albert Einstein to lead people of his generation. Mullin felt that he had a connection to Albert Einstein because he was born on the same day Einstein died.

Albert Einstein robber Matthew Maxwell is charged with bank robbery and battery.
