On Friday, the Obama’s hosted an annual Halloween trick-or-treat event at the White House. Hundreds of area schoolchildren, as well as children from military families, converged on the South Lawn to get candy from the the President and First Lady. As expected, superhero costumes and princess costumes were the favorites among the kids, but it was the toddler – who has not been identified as of this post – dressed as the Pope and pushed around in his Popemobile, who caught Obama’s attention. The president burst out into chuckles when he saw the young Pope.
“Top prize! Top prize!”
For his part, the Little Pope wasn’t particularly impressed with meeting one of the most powerful men in the world, and he seemed a bit taken aback by all the attention. At least one White House trick-or-treater dressed as the First Lady. Mr. and Mrs. Obama, for their part, didn’t dress in costume. Mrs. Obama has been known to don a leopard print and cat’s ears for the annual event, but this year she and her husband both kept it casual. Mr. Obama ditched the suit and tie in favor of slacks and a sweater.

Trick-or-treaters to the White House were treated to more than just candy, according to DNA India. This year’s theme was a carnival, complete with jugglers, trapeze artists, stilt-walkers and other performers, while classic Halloween tunes played on speakers in the background.
During the Kennedy administration, the First Family’s kids invited friends over for trick-or-treating and a small party.
But it was during the Nixon administration that the White House became open to the public for trick-or-treaters.
“In 1969, 250 local children from the Widening Horizons program came to a White House Halloween party. Once the visitors walked through, two witches stirring cauldrons awaited, handing out masks. Tricia Nixon, dressed as a gypsy in a purple and green gown with a purple harlequin mask, welcomed the children and their parents. The East Room was bedecked with balloons and filled with sideshows of clowns, magicians, fortune-tellers, puppeteers, and apple bobbers.”
He (or she) may not realize it, but the Little Pope continues an honored tradition of putting aside serious White House business for a few hours to let local kids enjoy Halloween with the President.
