Al-Ahram, an Egyptian newspaper, is reporting that Gamal Ibrahim, a man described as an Egyptian 20-something, has named his newborn daughter Facebook in honor of the protests that changed Egypt in less than a month.
Facebook wasn’t the only issue driving the demonstrations in Egypt that led, after weeks of massive protests, to Hosni Mubarak’s departure , but the social network has become a bit of a mascot or symbol of the demands of the Egyptian people and was leaned on heavily to spread news of the revolution virally throughout the world. ( Formerly imprisoned Google exec Wael Ghonim even thanked Facebook following his release and the collapse of the government in Egypt.) In part, the article was translated to report :
“The girl’s family, friends and neighbors in the Ibrahimya region gathered around the new born to express their continuing support for the revolution that started on Facebook. ‘Facebook’ received many gifts from the youth who were overjoyed by her arrival and the new name.”
No pics or other information about little baby Facebook have been released.
