Daytona State College police found a man and a woman hiding inside a closet they believed was locked. The couple had been inside the closet for two days until police opened the door and let them out on Tuesday. John Arwood, 31, and Amber Campbell , 25, claim that they were being chased when they chose to hide in the Marine and Environmental Science Center’s janitor’s closet.
The police who found the couple in the Daytona State College closet said they also found human feces and copper scouring pads. The pads are reportedly sometimes used to smoke crack. John Arwood called 911 from his cell phone to ask the police for help getting out of the closet. WFTV News reported that police officers did detect the smell of meth when rescuing the couple from the unlocked Daytona State College closet.
Florida police officers used Arwood’s cell phone signal to track their location. It remains unknown why neither John Arwood nor Amber Campbell did not call for help a lot sooner. Daytona State College was closed for winter break at the time of the incident.
The Daytona State College area police officers who rescued the couple have not been able to figure out any way the pair could have gotten locked in the closet. The officers went into the closet and closed the door, but the door did not lock. No drugs were found inside the closet where Arwood and Campbell had been hiding.
Both John Arwood and Amber Campbell had recently been reported missing from Osceola County, Florida. The couple was taken to the Volusia County jail and booked after the closet rescue.
The couple was charged with trespassing after being rescued from the closet they thought was locked. Amber Campbell was also charged with a probation violation. She was charged with resisting arrest in 2013. John Arwood’s criminal record reportedly includes five previous Florida jail sentences. The arrests, all of which occurred since 2000, were for drug possession, fleeing law enforcement officers, and for armed burglary.
