Move over, Bing Crosby and Perry Como: Bill Murray is teaming up with Lost In Translation director Sofia Coppola to do a Christmas special, and he’ll be singing!
Variety reports that both Murray and Coppola have confirmed the rumors that they’re working on a Christmas special, which as of this post has no title and no network commitment, but it will have Bill Murray’s brand of — well — Bill Murrayness all over it.
“It’s not going to be live. We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose. It will have a patina style and wit to it. It will be nice.”
Sofia Coppola said, via Huffington Post , that she’s excited to work with Bill Murray again.
“We’re working on a Christmas special. Not sure when it will air, but my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests.”
Speaking of the Huffington Post , they’ve done Bill a solid and have written the first joke for him.
“We’re imagining Murray walking slowly down the hallway in a santa hat, pondering how difficult it is to find meaningful human connection: ‘Do you hear what I hear? But seriously. Do you?’”
Bill Murray isn’t known for his singing voice — in fact, these days he’s mostly known for being Bill Murray and for not being in Ghostbusters 3 — but he does sing [rather badly] in his new film, St. Vincent , which also stars Melissa McCarthy (who, not coincidentally, is at the top of the list of women rumored to star in Ghostbusters 3 ).
OK, so St. Vincent isn’t really the best showcase for Bill Murray’s singing talents. He actually has a passable singing voice — he’s been known to knock out a few bars at blues festivals when the mood strikes him.
This will be Bill Murray’s first venture into the “Holiday” genre since 1988’s Scrooged, and since his Saturday Night Live days he’s made very few TV appearances, according to IMDB . And as for Sofia Coppola, she has quite the list of TV credits as a director or producer, but it looks like the Bill Murray Christmas special will be her first “Holiday” project.
