The United States and Israel jointly attacked Iran on February 28, and despite President Trump’s claims of the war being a “short excursion to the country,” it has now entered its second month.
As Iran’s chokehold of the Strait of Hormuz has led to significant fuel problems globally, Trump has now claimed that the U.S. would leave Iran within two to three weeks, and reaching a deal is now irrelevant.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday in the White House, Trump said, “We leave because there’s no reason for us to do this. We’ll be leaving very soon.” Setting aside the idea or requirement of the involved nations to reach a deal for the war to stop, Trump added, “Iran doesn’t have to make a deal. It’s a new regime. They are much more accessible.”

He continued, “No, they don’t have to make a deal with me when we feel that they are, for a long period of time, put into the Stone Ages, and they won’t be able to come up with a nuclear weapon. Then we’ll leave whether we have a deal or not. It’s irrelevant now. It’s possible that we’ll have a deal because they want to make a deal.”
Notably, Trump’s primary reason for attacking Iran was based on the speculation that they were building missiles to attack the U.S. However, U.S. Intelligence and Pentagon later pointed out that no such imminent threats existed from Iran’s side, which essentially made Trump’s logic behind attacking the country null and void.
Moreover, since the beginning of the war, the President has given varying details regarding its timeline or his plans with the country once it is over. He also talked about some kind of deal working out with Iran, which, according to Iranian authorities, never happened.
Despite the Iranian authorities previously mentioning that there were no talks about any deals from their sides, Trump again said on Tuesday, “They want to make a deal more than I want to make a deal, but in a fairly short period of time will be finished.” He then added, “Look what’s happening in Iran. I mean, we’re totally unchecked. Everything’s been bombed out.”

It now appears that Trump is floating the idea that the U.S. would damage the country so badly that the signing of a deal would not matter to end the war. America would simply be able to declare victory and leave, as the President added, “We’re hitting them very hard. Last night, we knocked out tremendous amounts of missile-making facilities.”
Hours after he talked to the press, the White House announced that he will deliver an address “to the nation to provide an important update on Iran” at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday.
With the war situation continuously escalating and the visible contradiction between Trump’s words and what actually is happening, it now remains to be seen if the U.S. indeed leaves Iran within the time the President claimed and even without having a deal.
