U.S. President Donald Trump‘s ‘Trump Accounts’ event on Jan. 28 was a policy summit about baby investment accounts. Instead, Trump clasped Nicki Minaj‘s hand and remarked on her nails.
Minaj walked onstage at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., when Trump lavished the rapper with compliments. Soon, these praises led critics to accuse the president of crossing the line in how he publicly praises women who show him loyalty.
Trump called Minaj onstage after repeatedly referring to her as an “unbelievable supporter,” and saying that she “gets more” applause than most of his allies. When she arrived, the two held hands as he continued praising her allegiance to the initiative.
Then, Trump said,
“I said, I’m gonna let my nails grow because I love those nails.”
He even repeated the line as the crowd laughed. “I’m gonna let those nails grow.”
President Trump just called Nicki Minaj up on stage, she said she is his number one fan (that was a lie, I am) and then he stood there holding her hand while someone else talked and he said he is going to grow his nails out like hers 😂 pic.twitter.com/EuW2m6bq2S

For critics, this incident fits into a pattern in Trump’s public praises of women who support him. Typically, he praises their physical traits awkwardly. That is why detractors compared the Minaj moment to how the president talks about younger female aides and allies, including White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. He praises her in personal terms and has fixated on her lips.

Minaj was wearing a white fur coat when she took the microphone and declared herself Trump’s “number one fan.” She then dismissed recent criticism of her political alignment, as the backlash only makes her support the 79-year-old president more.
“We’re not gonna let them get away with bullying him,” she said. “He has a lot of force behind him, and God is protecting him. Amen.”
Then she was ushered offstage as Trump invited another supporter for a cameo.
Notably, Minaj didn’t give any explanation of the accounts, though reports said that she planned to announce a major financial contribution. According to CNBC, Minaj plans to donate between $150,000 and $300,000 to the initiative.

Trump Accounts were introduced under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” The program will create investment accounts for U.S.-born children between 2025 and 2028 with a $1,000 federal contribution and invest in a broad stock-market index.
These funds will remain locked until the child turns 18, though.
The White House claims that, if untouched, the accounts could grow substantially by adulthood. For that reason, MAGA-aligned donors, like Michael and Susan Dell, have pledged billions to the Trump Accounts program.
