Matt Smith Joins ‘American Psycho’ Musical
Matt Smith has joined the cast of the American Psycho musical.
The outgoing Doctor Who star will play investment banker/serial killer Patrick Bateman in the stage adaptation of Brett Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel. Christian Bale played Bateman in the 2000 film adaptation.
American Psycho begins previews at London’s Almeida Theatre on December 3. The musical officially opens on December 12, with the original run scheduled to end January 25, 2014. If the musical performs well during its London run, there are plans to transfer it to Broadway and the West End.
According to Digital Spy, the American Psycho musical also features Ben Aldridge, Charlie Anson, Jonathan Bailey, Katie Brayben, Cassandra Compton, Holly Dale Spencer, Susannah Fielding, Simon Gregor, Holly James, Lucie Jones, Tom Kay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Eugene McCoy and Hugh Skinner.
There is also an American Psycho series in development over at FX. Instead of being set in the 1980s, it will be set in the present day. The series will also focus more on the murders committed by Patrick Bateman.
Matt Smith reportedly finished filming his final scenes as the Eleventh Doctor this past weekend. The 30-year-old makes his exit from Doctor Who on Christmas Day. Producer Marcus Wilson, who is also leaving the series, confirmed that filming for the special wrapped October 5.
Smith will appear in two more episodes before leaving the BBC series. He will appear alongside David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) and John Hurt (an unknown incarnation) in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. The BBC announced his replacement, Peter Capaldi, in August.
While some fans thought Smith was too young to play the Doctor, others felt 55-year-old Capaldi was too old for the role. However, the First Doctor, William Hartnell, was also 55 when he played the role. Subsequent incarnations tended to be early middle age.
Matt Smith can also be seen in Ryan Gosling’s upcoming directorial debut How to Catch a Monster, starring Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, and Eva Mendes. Filming began in Detroit on May 6, and is expected to be released sometime next year.
