How Much Did Oktobertfest Revelers Drink? Multiple Olympic Swimming Pools Full

Oktoberfest wrapped up in Germany on Sunday and the festival as always led to the consumption of way too much beer. According to several reports 6.4 million people attended the festival this year and they consumed 6.7 million litre-sized Mass glasses.

Over a 16 day period revelers consumed the equivalent of more than two full-sized Olympic swimming pools full of beer.

This year marked the 180th anniversary for the beer guzzling, lederhosen wearing, oopmpah music playing festival, and fans of the event couldn’t have been any happier, or more drunk.

According to Yahoo News the event wasn’t just about beer, cooks prepared 114 oxen and cooked up 58 cows. No doubt many attendees were consuming food late into the night as their drunken cravings showed no signs of slowing down. Other traditional snacks included giant pretzels, pork and dumplings.

In a sign of more responsible times or better beer management, the number of people seeking medical attention fell by 20 percent to 7,551. 638 people were treated for alcohol poisoning with most other cases involving cuts from broken glass, bumps, and other less severe injury.

Police were called to Oktoberfest 2,031 times this year, the same exact number of calls they received in 2012.

Only 58 brawls were started, although those fights did lead to 450 arrests for assault. 500 people also reported falling victim to pickpockets.

Ocktobertfest isn’t just popular for residents in Germany, travelers from all over the world arrive at the festival every single year. In fact, 1,000 passports were turned over to local authorities after being lost by drunken guests.

Perhaps the oddest lost item was a Segway personal transporter which was left behind by an Oktoberfest visitor.

Oktobertfest began more than 200 years ago but has only been celebrated 180 times because of disease outbreaks and wars which cancelled the event numerous times.
