Anastacia Underwent Double Mastectomy After Second Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Singer Anastacia revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time earlier this year.

The 45-year-old was first diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2003 after a routine mammogram before surgery for breast reduction. After the surgery and radiotherapy, Anastacia was told she was in remission. But the singer was diagnosed with a more intense form of breast cancer in February, and canceled her 13-date European tour. She announced that she was again cancer free in July.

The “I’m Outta Love” singer issued a statement revealing her double mastectomy Tuesday.

“In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month l wanted to take the opportunity to support a cause particularly close to my heart,” she said.

“l was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time earlier this year and am currently in the final stages of recovery after undergoing a double mastectomy,” she continued. “It has been an intense journey but l am feeling great and ready to start the next chapter.”

Anastacia added:

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives all who are facing this disease a chance to gain strength and support from each other. Early detection has saved my life twice. I will continue to battle and lend my voice in any way I can.”

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Anastacia created “The Anastacia Fund” in partnership with Estee Lauder, which helps raise awareness about the disease and the importance of mammograms from women 35 and under. The American Cancer Society and other organizations recommend annual breast cancer screening starting at age 40, but Anastacia was 34 when she went in for her mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer the first time.

The Chicago native is currently writing songs for her sixth studio album, set to be released next year. She last performed live in December 2012, and was last seen on TV as a guest judge on The X Factor.

Earlier this year, Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy after learning she carried a gene that increased her risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
