Colorado Hikers: Five Killed In Massive Rock Slide

Five Colorado hikers have died in a massive rock slide. Authorities rescued 13-year-old Gracie Johnson from the debris. However, five others remain buried under tons of rock.

The hikers were resting at an outlook along Agnes Vaille Falls in Nathrop. When the rock slide began, Gracie’s father saved her life by covering her body with his.

Gracie suffered a broken leg, cuts, and bruises. However, she is expected to fully recover from her injuries.

As reported by CNN, the victims’ names were not released. However, they are identified as Gracie’s parents and other members of her family.

Authorities say the trail leading to the outlook is easy to navigate. The trail is popular as it offers panoramic views of the falls and the Chalk Creek Valley.

The trailhead is located near St. Elmo ghost town and the Chalk Lake campground.

The trail is maintained by the US Forest Service. Chaffee County Undersheriff John Spezze says the rock slide was “totally unexpected.” Spezze says the Forest Service is considering permanent closure of the trail.

Hikers have reported that fallen rocks are common on and around the trail.

Although the exact reason for the rock slide is unknown, authorities suspect weather was a factor.

A coroner sifted through the debris on Monday evening, confirming the five Colorado hikers were dead. However, officials had to evacuate the area as the rocks remained unstable.

A rescue team will attempt to remove the hikers’ bodies this afternoon.

As reported by Fox News, Agnes Vaille Falls is named a hiker who was killed on Long’s Peak. Vaille ascended the mountain in the winter of 1925. She was killed on her way to the 14,000 foot peak.

Authorities hope to recover the Colorado hikers’ bodies by the end of the day. Gracie is currently recovering at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
