McDonald’s is giving you an opportunity to eat a little healthier at its restaurants. The fast food chain will soon add salads, fruits, and vegetables to its value menu.

Beginning early next year, McDonald’s fans can control the amount of calories they plan to ingest during a trip to the restaurant. If you want to substitute something healthy in place of french fries, then you’ll be able to do so without any additional charges.

The Daily Mail reports that the fast food chain announced the additions at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City. McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson said the company is hoping to lure more people into restaurants by giving customers healthy alternatives to its classic menu items.

“What is it that customers will choose, and what will they eat? What we don’t want to do is just put something on the menu and say, hey, we did it. We really want consumption,” Thompson explained during an interview.

According to Reuters , McDonald’s already offers fruits, vegetables, and salads in certain parts of the world. However, Thompson revealed that the company intends to have the items available to folks in 20 major global markets by 2020 .

Adding healthy alternatives to its value menu is just one of the ways McDonald’s is hoping to change the way people eat. The Inquisitr previously reported that the company will stop marketing soft drinks to children in Happy Meals.

The fast food chain said in a recent statement:

“Our partnership with the Clinton Foundation and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation is another important step in our journey. And we know there’s more to do. We will continue to use our size and scale around the world to help educate, empower and encourage our customers to make informed choices so they can live a balanced and healthy lifestyle.”

What do you think about McDonald’s offering salads, fruits, and vegetables on its value menu? Do you believe people will seriously consider these healthy alternatives?
