Eric Mangini has a Monday Meeting with Holmgren

With the John Fox firing, five NFL coaches have loss their jobs and it looks like Eric Mangini will be the sixth come Monday. The Cleveland Browns’ head man will meet with team President Mike Holmgren on Monday to discuss the direction of this team. Mangini won his last four games of 2009 to keep his job for 2010, but five or six wins does not seem to be a big enough improvement to keep the job once more. I however do not think that Holmgren will step in as coach.

I think Mike will look to hire his guy, let us not forget that he inherited Mangini and it seems likely he will want his own man to lead Cleveland back to the promised land. Who that might be is anyone guess. Maybe we will see a return of Dick Jauron or even Jon Gruden both of whom are from his coaching tree. If Marty Mornhinweg were to ever get another head coaching gig maybe his old buddy Holmgren would give him that opportunity.

Whomever it is going to be, I don’t see it being Mangini. We could make a strong case for Holmgren to take over, but he has proven much as a coach. I think he is trying to prove he can run a front office as well. Whomever he hires I sincerly hope they make the Browns a whole lot better and that we once again see the brown and the orange in the NFL playoffs.
