Patrick Stewart has married jazz singer Sunny Ozell.
The 73-year-old made the announcement on Twitter Sunday, writing, “Yes, married,” accompanied by a picture of him and 35-year-old Ozell in a ball pit.
X-Men co-star Ian McKellen officiated the ceremony, posting a picture of himself with a t-shirt that says “Minister” and holding a Doctor of Divinity degree on his official Facebook page with the message, “I did my part.”
Patrick Stewart and Sunny Ozell began dating in 2008 after meeting at Stewart’s performance of Macbeth at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The couple announced their engagement in March, and McKellen announced that he would be marrying them .
“I’m going to marry Patrick,” the 74-year-old said. “How else do you put that? I’m going to officiate at his wedding.”
McKellen admitted that he didn’t have much experience as a minister.
“I’ve done it once before with two guys having a civil partnership,” he said. “I was crying my eyes out.”
Unfortunately, the couple won’t be able to enjoy a long honeymoon. Patrick Stewart is set to star with Ian McKellen in the Harold Pinter drama No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot , which starts previews next month at Broadway’s Cort Theater.
No Man’s Land began its pre-Broadway run on August 3 and officially opened August 11 at Berkeley Repertory. It arrives on Broadway, in repertory with Waiting for Godot , October 26, with an official opening November 14. The plays will run for 14 weeks.
Stewart and McKellen have appeared on stage together once before. In 1977, the actors — who are a Knight and Commander of the Order of the British Empire, respectively — performed in the premiere of Tom Stoppard’s Every Good Boy Deserves Favour . Both men were knighted for their services to drama and the performing arts. Stewart was also made a Knight Bachelor in 2010 New Year Honours for services to drama, and McKellen was made a Companion of Honour in 2008.
