While a few people knew Scandal star was dating now-husband Nnamdi Asomugha, no one knew the actress was getting married — including her co-stars.
“I did know she was dating,” Dan Bucatinsky, who plays James on the hit drama, told E! News at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Pre-Emmy Performers Peer Group reception. “I didn’t know that they were going to get married, but all of us sort of hoped. We wish her the best always. She did it in the perfect way.”
Washington and Asomugha were married in a private ceremony on June 24 in Hailey, Idaho. Washington’s mother and father, Valerie and Earl, served as witnesses. Asomugha’s sister, Chisaraokwu Asomugha, officiated the wedding.
“I don’t think that was necessarily planned but she ultimately learned something from Olivia,” Bucatinsky said. “I think she just wanted a little privacy.”
Bucatinsky said the first time he saw Washington after the wedding was shortly after Emmy nominations were announced.
“We ran into each other on the lot where we were both doing some reaction press, and she and I just hugged each other in the parking lot,” he said. “I was so happy for her for the Emmy but mostly for her marriage. She so deserves that and she’s really private in her personal life and I really respect that and there’s no better person. She’s one of my heroes.”
Washington almost made the trip down the aisle once before. She was engaged to actor David Moscow, who played young Josh Baskin in Big, from October 2004 to March 2007. After the two split up, Washington said she was “always that girl who was in long-term relationships.” She also said she was scared to start dating again at first, but that it was fun and she was “having a blast meeting people.”
