Sabre Outage Delays Flights, Forces Airlines To Check Travelers In Manually

A Sabre outage caused flight delays and frustrated travelers after a technical glitch brought down the system used to store airline reservations.

The problem arose Tuesday morning when a hiccup brought the system down for close to three hours. It was long enough to throw a wrench in travel plans worldwide, as some airlines were forced to manually check in their customers. The Sabre outage is believed to have affected close to 300 airlines and more than 100 airports across the globe.

“More than 300 million passengers are put on airplanes every year using our technology,” the company noted.

The outage was reported at close to 12:20 am EST, causing delays largely for the western portion of the United States as well as Australia.

Because of the glitch, Virgin Australia was forced to use a manual check-in process for all domestic and international flights.

“As a result, the check-in process may take longer than usual and there may be some delays to flights,” a company spokesperson said. “We apologize for any inconvenience and we are working with Sabre to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

At the Johannesburg airport, British Airways flights were delayed and Alaska Airlines saw 50 flights miss their expected departure times. Other airlines reporting delays included Frontier, American, American Eagle, JetBlue, and Virgin America.

At the Los Angeles International Airport, 17 flights were hit with delays of between 15 and 45 minutes, officials noted. Airport officials warned travelers to check the status of their flights carefully before departing.

Sabre acknowledged the outage on Tuesday, alerting travelers that it was working on fixing the problem.

“Sabre is experiencing a system issue,” the company tweeted shortly after the error was detected. “Our technology team is working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.

By Tuesday afternoon the Sabre outage had been fixed and the system was back online.
