Wagoner Jail Escape: County Inmates Caught After Jailbreak

Two inmates overpowered a prison guard in a dramatic Wagoner jail escape on Monday night.

The two convicted men, Larry Cotton, aged 35, and Mickey Staggs, aged 38, escaped from the Wagoner County prison in what was clearly a well planned and perfectly executed jailbreak.

Sheriff Bob Colbert said that Cotton and Staggs forcibly grabbed an on-duty jail guard, stole his keys and then locked him in an empty cell. Colbert said that although the guard was violently overpowered, he was alright, “The jailer is OK. He had minor injuries.”

The two escapees are notorious in Wagoner County and have been charged many times in the past for crimes for which they were convicted. The extensive list of felonies includes: illegal possession of a firearm, endangering life while eluding police officers, driving a stolen vehicle, running roadblocks, and driving without a license.

The story of the Wagoner jail escape ended with the recapture of the two men. Cotton was arrested in an empty apartment somewhere in south Wagoner. Staggs was found by the police at around midday on Tuesday, as he walked through a wooded area near Sperry.

Cotton and Staggs appeared to have been careful not to have hurt the jail guard too much, and it’s clear that the men prepared meticulously before they made their daring escape from the Wagoner County jail.
