Lindsay Lohan’s The Canyons Shredded By Most Critics, One Compares Her To Brando

You probably weren’t expecting Lindsay Lohan’s The Canyons to do very well with the critics, and it didn’t. The movie was unceremoniously panned by everyone except one critic who loved it and even compared Lohan to Marlon Brando.

The Canyons has been the source of much industry curiosity, with several insider reports alleging diva-like behavior on Lohan’s part during filming. Early reviews were bad, and pretty much everyone was expecting a train-wreck. Now that most critics have had a chance to look at it, the response has ranged from mixed to outright pan.

“Here, Lohan is as bland and unfocused as the material. During the one scene that allows her [to] degrade her oppressive boyfriend, her robotic delivery freezes the possibilities of bonafide tension (as well as titillation, for whatever that’s worth),” wrote Eric Kohn for IndieWire.

“It’s this sort of non-entertaining, pseudo-arty film that partially is responsible for the shuttered and abandoned movie theaters that symbolically adorn the opening and closing credits,” wrote Todd McCarthy of THR. He labeled Lohan’s performance “OK but unexceptional.”

But Scott Foundas of Variety was really taken with The Canyons. If viewed as an indictment on the film industry itself, the film’s focus takes shape. He even compares Lohan to iconic actor Marlon Brando.

“The major exception Lohan, who gives one of those performances, like Marlon Brando’s in ‘Last Tango in Paris,’ that comes across as some uncanny conflagration of drama and autobiography. Lohan may not go as deep or as far as Brando, but with her puffy skin, gaudy hoop earrings and thick eye makeup, there’s a little-girl-lost quality to the onetime Disney teen princess that’s very affecting.”

For her part, Lohan is still completing her court-mandated rehab, but managed to skim some reviews for The Canyons while inside. She linked to Foundas’ piece on her Twitter, and said that she felt “humbled” by his review.
