National Lollipop Day And Other Things To Do This Weekend

National Lollipop Day is today, but it’s just one of many things going on this weekend.

As far as national holidays go, National Lollipop Day doesn’t require much of you. Just have a lollipop. Manufacturers actually start preparing for July 20 every year in advance.

The lollipop is thought to have been created in 1908 by a guy named George Smith who made the first modern version of the candy we know and love today. He created the lollipop due to his belief that eating hard candy from a stick would be easier than doing it by hand.

He named his invention after his favorite racing horse, Lolly Pop.

Later, Racine Confectioners Machinery Co. created a machine that automated Smith’s process. It could make 40 lollipops per minute.

It has been suggested that a man named Samuel Born actually automated the lollipop first with his “Born Sucker machine” in 1916.

Eventually, lollipops adopted the multi-colored and multi-flavored varieties we enjoy today.

In addition to National Lollipop Day, there’s actually a lot of stuff going on this weekend.

Saturday is also National Hot Dog Day, and Sunday is National Ice Cream Day, so this is a good weekend to break out the elastic pants and live a little.

Additionally, Saturday kicks off National Scrabble Week, so you could break out the board and play a few rounds with family and friends.

Of course, you could always catch a movie. Out this week are Red 2, R.I.P.D.,Turbo, and TheConjuring.

Saturday is also the anniversary of the first manned moon landing as well as the one-year anniversary of the Aurora shooting.

Happy National Lollipop Day!
