‘Capcom vs. SNK 2’ Coming To PlayStation Network Next Week In North America

Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001, the crossover fighting game series that brought together characters from Capcom and SNK – known primarily for the King of Fighters series – will be coming to PlayStation Network next week, as revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast.

Before you get overly excited, this version of Capcom vs. SNK 2 is just a straight port and no new features have been added. In other words, don’t expect to be able to play against others online.

The Marvel vs. Capcom series may get all of the attention these days, but Capcom vs. SNK 2 was one of the most widely played fighting games of its time; it was one of the most technical fighting games out there that came with a fairly steep learning curve, but competitive players ate it up.

Just like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK 2 featured an astonishing amount of characters – 23 on the Capcom side, and 24 on the SNK side (including console-exclusive characters Evil Ryu and Wild Iori).

While Capcom’s other crossover fighting game franchise focused on high combo counts and frantically-paced action, Capcom vs. SNK 2 was, again, a lot more technical. Instead, the game felt like more of a mix between Street Fighter and King of Fighters.

Considering the name, that makes sense.

Part of the game’s depth came from the “Groove” system; when selecting a character you were able to select between one of six “Grooves,” which altered the way the character played based on the different mechanics from each company’s fighting games.

If you picked a SNK Groove for a Street Fighter character, for example, you’ll have the ability to do certain actions exclusive to SNK games – and vice versa.

If you never had the chance to check out Capcom vs. SNK 2 when it was originally released, this is about your only chance to give it a look. The fact that the PSN version isn’t a port with online play functionality is still a disappointment, but it’s still worth checking out in this author’s opinion.

No price was revealed on the Blogcast, so you’ll likely have to wait until next week to find out. In the meantime, you can check out the videos below to see some high level Capcom vs. SNK 2 action straight from iPlayWinner‘s YouTube channel.
