Big news, X-Men fans (no, we’re not talking about Hugh Jackman’s interest in Avengers 2 ). An X-Force film is in the works, and while we’re a long way from production, the studio has signed a pretty talented writer-director to pen the script.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Jeff Wadlow, whose work we’ll see in the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 , has been brought on to write the script for a possible X-Force film. He could also potentially direct the film, but there’s nothing official there yet.

The announcement comes after a day full of speculation for entertainment media. Bleeding Cool reported early on Friday that Twentieth Century Fox would announce an X-Force film at Comic-Con next week, and THR ‘s announcement at least confirms that the movie is in motion.

The X-Force was created in 1991 as a spin-off from the main X-Men team of comic book heroes. The book featured more hard-edged mutant characters who were willing to use firearms and extreme violence to achieve their goals.

The original line-up included Boom Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar and Warpath. Characters Siryn, Rictor and Sunspot joined the team in later issues.

The team has been cancelled and rebooted several times, but most incarnations have the team leader, Cable, in common. He’s a… you know, just go read his Wikipedia page .

X-Force creator Rob Liefeld has been entertaining casting suggestions on Twitter since the news hit:
