Nigella Lawson’s husband Charles Saatchi has reportedly filed for divorce.
News of the split arrived weeks after controversial photos of the couple were published in a UK tabloid. Saatchi was caught by a photographer with his hand around Lawson’s throat. The art collector later turned himself over to police after news of the incident spread around the world.
According to People , Charles Saatchi said in a statement that he is divorcing Nigella Lawson because she didn’t publicly defend him after the photos were published. The former advertising guru said he was “disappointed” in his wife.
Saatchi said in a statement to the Daily Mail :
I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced. I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women, and have never abused her physically in any way.
Charles Saatchi went on to say that his love for Nigella Lawson runs “very deep.” However, the art collector feels he has no choice but to divorce his wife since she never came to his defense following the controversy.
“The row photographed at Scott’s restaurant could equally have been Nigella grasping my neck to hold my attention — as indeed she has done in the past,” Saatchi added.
Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi have been married for nine years. During an interview in 2007, the celebrity chef briefly explained the dynamics of their relationship. According to Lawson, Saatchi is an “exploder” while she is a “festerer.”
Lawson has yet to respond to her husband’s statement as of this writing. Given her silence over the past few weeks, it could be a while before she says anything about these reports.
