Dish, also known as Dish Network, the company that provides satellite television, will be introducing a new high speed broadband service in the first quarter of this year. They also announced the Dish ‘Hopper’, a whole home DVR system that has a huge 2TB hard drive and can record up to six, yes six shows at a time while pushing content out to three rooms at the same time.
The high speed Internet service unsurprisingly dubbed ‘Dish Broadband’, will feature speeds up to 12 mbps download and 3 mbps upload, something that was previously unheard of for satellite customers.
They’re partnering with ViaSat to bring these much faster speeds to consumers.
“Dish CEO Joe Clayton said the new service will be hugely appealing to rural users who currently don’t have access to broadband service or are stuck with middling DSL service. An entry-level package of Dish plus Dish Broadband will start at $79.95 a month with a planned launch for this summer.”
While it may sound pricey for those who can benefit from a more affordable cable or DSL connection, people who have limited options would be willing to pay the extra price for faster or even Internet at all.
Out in more rural areas, satellite is a very common option so this is a great fit and great integration for those already with satellite. Depending on how this goes for Dish, competitor DirecTV may soon roll out their own version. Currently, Internet speeds through Satellite are in the DSL range, around 1.5 to 2 mbps.
