The Times Square bombing in 2008 may be connected to previous bombings.
Footage of the 2008 bombing in Time Square was released by the FBI recently which may show a connection to previous bombings of foreign consulates in Manhattan.
The bomb was a military device filled with explosive powder and detonated with a timed fuse. The device was detonated beneath Times Square at the Armed Forces Recruiting Station early March 6 at 3:40am.
According to officials, “the explosive device was built using an ammunition can commonly found on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was filled halfway with black powder and detonated using a time fuse. Although no one was wounded, the device could have caused significant casualties if people had been close to the blast.”
Tuesday, FBI officials claim to have found a possible connection between the 2008 Times Square bombing and previous attacks that had gone unsolved in New York. One attack had happened at the British consulate on East 42nd Street in May 2005, and the other at the Mexican consulate on East 37th Street in October 2007.
What was the connection they found, you may ask? Both bombs were delivered via a suspect riding a bicycle between 3am and 4am, which just happens to coincide with the Times Square bombing in 2008.
FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos said, “Someone, somewhere, knows something about a bomber who’s still on the run. Today we’re asking for the public’s assistance in finding those responsible and encouraging the public to look closely at these photos and video, which could be the key to breaking the case.”
The security camera footage above clearly shows the suspect wearing a grey sweatshirt, placing a bomb at Times Square, and fleeing on a 10-speed Ross bicycle. The same bicycle was said to have been found behind a dumpster near Madison Avenue and East 38th Street.
The FBI believes the bicyclist may be the same person in all three bombings and hopes the public will catch the connection and assist in the arrest of the Times Square bomber.
Do you believe the same person was responsible for the Times Square bombing in 2008 who was also involved in the consulate bombings?
