New York Yankees mid season review

All righty then, so we may be a little early, but not so early that we cannot begin our mid season review of the 30 Major League Baseball teams. We are approaching the All Star break, the traditional half way point of the season. So we begin in the American League East with the New York Yankees. They are 43-27, 6-4 over their last ten and leading tied for the division lead with the Boston Red Sox, and just a half game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays. For the most part things are pretty good in Yankee land.

As a team they are hitting .274 the fourth best mark in the American League. They have 659 hits with 121 doubles and 19 triples. They have also gone yard 78 times and driven in 362 runs. They have stolen 43 bases, and the lowest hitting member of their starting nine is DH Nick Johnson. They may be looking for a bigger bat to be here everyday DH.

On the mound things are pretty good as well. The team ERA is 3.90 and they have struck out 502 batters compared to issuing 217 walks. The bullpen has put together 19 saves, and has not been overwhelming. They might need to make a move to add a relief arm, as a good portion of their bullpen has struggled a bit.

Their main acquisition in the off season is having a so-so season. CF Curtis Granderson seems to fit better in the sixth spot then he did leading off while with the Detroit Tigers. He is hitting .234 with six home runs and 20 RBI; He has also stolen five bases. He still has a lot of strike outs, which has always been his problem. So far this season he strikes out in 21% of his at bats.
