Adam McKay Says ‘Hansel And Gretel’ Sequel Will Be ‘Pretty Insane’

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters producer Adam McKay is pretty excited about the upcoming sequel to the box office hit.

The Anchorman 2 director and the folks at Gary Sanchez Productions were instrumental in getting the action-packed flick on the big screen. Since the movie made a tidy sum of money during its theatrical release, Paramount is interested in getting a sequel off the ground as soon as possible.

If Adam McKay’s enthusiasm for the follow-up is genuine, then fans should expect some “pretty insane” things when the next installment hits theaters.

“I’ve already started to hear some of the ideas [director Tommmy Wirkola] is working on, and its pretty insane,” he explained. “This could be one of those instances where the sequel does go further than the first one,” he explained during an interview with MovieWeb.

Since R-rated movies don’t make as much cash as their PG-13 brethren, there’s a chance the studio could push director Tommy Wirkola to release Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters 2 as a teen-friendly experience.

“I think Paramount regrets [releasing the R-rated version]. I think they are worried that they left some money on the table. There is some discussion about how we’re gong to handle that with the second one,” McKay explained.

Despite getting a ripped apart by critics upon its release last January, the movie actually did quite well at the box office. Witch Hunters would eventually make around $225 million worldwide. Not surprisingly, Paramount is ready to move forward with the follow-up.

As far as those negative reviews are concerned, Adam McKay doesn’t see it as a very big issue. In fact, he said they anticipated the poor reception from critics.

“I sort took the critical reviews as almost kind of lazy, when they said it wasn’t any good. It’s just from a distance you could tell certain critics were just going to write it off immediately,” he explained to Cinema Blend.
