The Bachelorette’s Meredith Phillips recently opened up about her battle with alcoholism.
The reality star told People Magazine that she used to drink alcohol like it was a “full-time job.” The former Bachelorette star said that she would drink four bottles of wine a night and would frequently black out.
Phillips said that she started drinking at an early age and used to pride herself on the fact that she would do “12 beer bongs” before noon.
Phillips said : (I was proud to be) drinking 12 beer bongs by 12 p.m., even if I woke up at 10 a.m. I thought it was cool that I was a chick and could do that.”
And in case you were wondering, yes, Phillips was drunk while she was on The Bachelorette. The reality star, who was sent home fourth to last during her season, said that she was drunk on every episode.
Phillips said: “I knew my tolerance levels … Alcoholics are good at that. I figured out how much I drink and function.”
But after decades of non-stop drinking, the reality star said that she has finally taken a step in the right direction. Phillips is now about six months sober and she plans on staying that way.
Phillips said: “For years I’d wake up every day feeling like I was hit by a truck … I realized I was going to kill myself. There wasn’t another path for me other than to stop. I’m finally starting to live my life again. I still have a lot of healing to do, but I’m feeling better every day. There are definitely times when I miss drinking. I’m not saying one day I won’t want that glass of wine, but I don’t right now and that’s a good start. Life is short and I have a second chance.”
