Lil Scrappy is headed to rehab after failing a court-ordered drug test.
The rapper appeared in court on Wednesday after he failed a urine test. However, Scrappy’s lawyer stated that his client acknowledges his addiction to marijuana and is interested in getting some help.
According to TMZ, Lil Scrappy will check himself into a rehab facility ahead of his next court date in June. Mawuli Mel Davis, the rapper’s lawyer, told the website that his client is wants to kick the habit and get back in the court’s good graces.
“After testing positive, Mr. Richardson went and sought clinical help and was diagnosed with marijuana addition and post-traumatic stress disorder,” Davis explained to the court.
While Scrappy is apparently willing to suffer the consequences for his actions, his lawyer is worried that a trip to jail might damage the work he’s done with a youth mentoring program.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution explains that DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Daniel M. Coursey decided that the rapper should enroll in a treatment program within the next week. He is ordered to return to court on June 12 to discuss his progress.
“He obviously needs some help to get off drugs. And we can’t trust him to do it on his own. I think he’s tried to cheat the system,” Judge Coursey explained.
The musician, whose real name is Darryl Kevin Richardson II, got into a bit of trouble last March after he attempted to turn in a urine sample that was reportedly cold to the touch. Lil Scrappy refused a request by court officials to provide another sample. This ultimately resulted in a warrant for his arrest.
The rapper later turned himself over to authorities. News One reports that Scrappy’s arrest was captured on video for the VH1 reality series Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta. His brush with police will be featured in an upcoming episode.
It’s currently unknown which rehab facility Lil Scrappy has selected for his treatment.
