Diego Sanchez Set To Return At UFC 164

Diego Sanchez will be making his return to the Octagon at UFC 164 in August.

Sanchez (24-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC), who won the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, is coming off of a split-decision win against Takanori Gomi at UFC on Fuel TV: Silva vs. Stann last month.

“I talked to (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva yesterday, and he penciled me in for August 31. We’re looking at opponents,” Sanchez said in an interview with MMA Junkie. “I did like I always do and said, ‘Look, you’re the man, Joe. You’re the one who makes all these big matchups. And I’m, in my opinion, in the most stacked division in the UFC, and there are plenty of great fights out there, and you’ll hook me up with a good scrap.'”

UFC 164 will take place at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee on August 31. So far, no other fighters have been announced, but Sanchez says he will be fighting on the main card. He threw out a few names, including Gilbert Melendez — who recently lost to Benson Henderson — Nate Diaz, who could be heading back to the welterweight division, and Josh Thomson, who defeated Diaz at UFC on FOX 7.

“There are so many good fights in that division that I couldn’t narrow it down to one,” Sanchez said. Instead, he is leaving it to Silva to pick the best opponent.

Prior to his win against Gomi, Sanchez’s last bout was the headliner against Jake Ellenberger at UFC on Fuel TV on February 15, 2012. Ellenberger won the match by unanimous decision. Before that, Sanchez fought Martin Kampmann in another headliner at UFC Live on March 3, 2011. He won that fight by unanimous decision.

Diego Sanchez has been fighting in MMA since 2002 and had a record of 17-0 before losing his first fight to Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 on April 7, 2007.
