Selena Gomez Wears Bindi At MTV Movie Awards, Causes Uproar

Selena Gomez’s decision to wear a bindi at the MTV Movie Awards has caused an uproar among members of the Hindu community.

The Universal Society of Hinduism officials believe that the singer’s decision to wear the bindi at the awards ceremony was “insensitive.” Members of the community are asking Gomez to apologize and “get acquainted with the basics of world religions.”

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed explained:

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol. It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed.”

Although the Hindu community has been very vocal about Selena Gomez and the bindi she wore at the MTV Movie Awards, several fans who found the performance to be insensitive addressed the matter on Twitter.

“Cultural appropriation at it’s finest,” one of Gomez’s followers said after her appearance on the show. “My respect for Selena is fading as we speak.”

“Selena Gomez the bindi is not just some fashion accessory you can throw on, cultural appropriation man,” another individual tweeted.

The bindi is generally worn by woman for religious purposes in South Asia. However, the decoration has become something of a fashion statement outside of India. So many people were offended by the singer’s bindi that the term “cultural appropriation” started trending on Twitter.

While members of the Hindu community have asked Selena Gomez to apologize for wearing the bindi, she has yet to address the situation as of this writing. Of course, not everyone feels that the Spring Breakers star did anything wrong.

What do you think about Selena Gomez wearing a bindi at the MTV Movie Awards? Do you think she should have to apologize to the Hindu community?
