‘SNL’ Gun Control Skit Mocks Senate’s New Background Check Proposal

Last week, the senate finally managed to do something about the gun laws in this county. What exactly? According to SNL’s gun control skit last night, “they agreed to begin thinking about talking about gun control.”

The senate voted in favor of a proposal last week that was proposed by Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey. Some people praised the proposal saying that the senate was finally taking a step in the right direction, while others, like the crew at SNL, mocked the gun control proposal saying that it’s a useless piece of legislation that really won’t get anything done.

Jay Pharoah’s Barack Obama said:

“As you know, over the past few months, I have made gun control legislation a top priority for my administration. Which is why I am so proud to announce that last week, the Senate voted 68 to 31 to begin debating the idea of discussing gun control. Let me say that again: They’ve agreed to think about talking about gun control.”

Bill Hadar Jason Sudeikis then step in as senators Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to explain the merits of their proposal. The due explain that the new proposal includes strict safety measures that would require gun shop owners to ask potential buyers “if they are a nice person.” The bill will also require shop owners to follow up that question with, “seriously, are you?”

Manchin and Toomey explain: “Is this bill what we wanted? No. No. Is this bill what the NRA wanted? No. But does it at least help in some small way? No. Probably not.”

SNL may mock the senate’s new gun control skit but the late night comedy did acknowledge that the bill could have one major consequence: Manchin and Toomey are going to lose their jobs.

Pharoah said: “These men risked everything for this bill. I mean, Sen. Manchin represents West Virginia and he’s proposing gun reform? He’s gonna lose his job. And Sen. Toomey. This man is a Republican who is willing to make just the slightest compromise on gun control? He’s going to lose his job too.”

Here’s the skit from SNL.
