‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ New Trailer Wreaks Familiar Havoc [Video]

A new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer has arrived.

Following a third teaser trailer released earlier this month, the new 2:18 clip of J.J. Abrams’s highly anticipated sequel to his Star Trek reboot reveals more about the scale of terrorist attack on Earth that recalls the Enterprise crew home, and its architect — John Harrison, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

“You think your world is safe, it is an illusion. Enjoy these final moments of peace,” intones Harrison, described by Starfleet brass as “one of our top agents.”

Apparently avenging some heinous crime by Starfleet’s commanders, Harrison promises that no-one is safe. As previously revealed in the third teaser, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) defies an executive order not to go after this new adversary and leads his crew on a manhunt.

Previous glimpses of the action to come have shown Kirk (Pine) and Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) running from a active volcano across what appears to a red colored field, before the pair make the leap from a steep cliff into deep waters.

In this new international Star Trek trailer, more scenes of mayhem are seen in London, the first casualty in Harrison’s jihad. At one point we hear Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana), say “we’re outnumbered, out-gunned,” setting the scene for the Enterprise crew’s showdown with a formidable villain nursing an seemingly insurmountable grievance.

Inevitably, going by the 2009 triumph alone, there will be some light and shade amid the darkness. Abrams has teased an nuanced climax to the story, and said that one of his aims with the new Star Trek chapter is “to make you cry.”

Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in the US on May 17 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, and newbies Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve.
