Dungeon Defenders II has been announced with a trailer.
Dungeon Defenders is a tower defense game, the likes of which has had tons of clones across the mobile platforms. Now Trendy Entertainment is following up on the success of their original title with the free-to-play Dungeon Defenders II.
Before you leap on over and try out the competitive side, be aware that it’s in the closed beta form, ready to play only at PAX East, and the keys to the beta test have a waiting list. Trendy Entertainment says, “Once you join the beta, you’ll be able to share your feedback directly to the team. Your opinions and insights, along with the hard numbers we’ll gather from your play sessions, will shape our launch game.”
So it appears that Trendy Entertainment isn’t pulling a Microsoft. They’re waiting until Dungeon Defenders II has been play-tested and tweaked from that before releasing it to the public. They said they are adding more role-playing-style features in an effort to add replay value. And what you earn in competitive mode will carry over into cooperative play.
Trendy Entertainment says the reason they’re going with the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena is:
“During the development of Dungeon Defenders we constantly tried different multiplayer modes. Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, you name it. None of them really fit. When planning the sequel, we couldn’t drop the idea that a MOBA in the Dungeon Defenders universe would rock. Maybe it was all the after-hour games of League [of Legends] we played in the office. We don’t know. But it fit well into the storyline and achieved a core goal of helping Dungeon Defenders players meet new players, so we went all in.”
Expect a gameplay video on Trendy Entertainment’s website, showing off the competitive mode, on March 22.
