Critically acclaimed actress Meryl Streep is vying for a cameo in Anchorman 2 , and if the gossip mill is anything to go by, she just might get it.
The 63-year-old Oscar winner from lauded films like Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady is reportedly a huge Anchorman fan, and doesn’t see why Harrison Ford should have all of the fun in the sequel (more on that below).
What’s more, actor Steve Carell (Brick “I Love Lamp” Tamland in Ron Burgundy’s first adventure) is optimistic that the cast and crew can make room for Streep.
“Meryl Streep told me she was a huge Anchorman fan and she’d love to have a cameo in the sequel,” Carell said in a recent interview . “That could be really funny. There are going to be plenty of great cameos in this movie,” he said.
Carell also revealed some other juicy Anchorman tidbits in the interview, admitting that the first movie was “the most fun I’d ever had, professionally. Every day, I laughed until I cried,” and coyly remarking that he had also heard Kristen Wiig was cast as his character’s love interest.
Oh, and the “I love lamp” scene referenced above? Totally improvised.
“Sometimes Adam [McKay, the director] would say to us, ‘At the end of this scene, just add something, whatever you like.’ I started naming things I saw in the room – ‘I love rug, I love lamp’ – and Will [Ferrell] called me on it as the cameras were still rolling. He was like, ‘Are you just looking at things and saying you love them?’ And that’s what ended up in the movie.”
Other fun Anchorman 2 news (alluded to above) has another highly respected thespian joining the cast for a hopefully hilarious cameo. Harrison Ford has signed on as “a smarmy news anchor whose apartment also smells of rich mahogany.” Yeah, that’s the actual description of his character . As if I wasn’t excited enough for this film.
